2018 Update: The Oakland Indie Awards is taking a break!
Over eleven years ago, Beneficial State Foundation's wonderful colleague, Erin Kilmer-Neel, and several of her friends organized the first Oakland Indie Awards to celebrate and support Oakland-based small independent businesses and artists who contribute to Oakland's unique culture and prosperity. For a decade, Beneficial State Foundation has organized extremely successful Indie Awards celebrations that highlight the tremendous impact of independent businesses and artists in Oakland. The success of the event has been achieved in great part because of the participation of you - our beloved community.
While Beneficial State Foundation remains committed to supporting small businesses and artists in Oakland, we plan to take a break this year from organizing the Oakland Indie Awards. We have concluded that we need to rethink and innovate on the best way to continue to show our support, and so in 2018, we plan to reach out to our trusted partners in arts and small businesses development to discuss the best way to do so. The Oakland Indie Awards is an economic development initiative of Beneficial State Bank and Foundation that aims to build prosperity in our communities by celebrating local economy. Since its inception in 2007, the Oakland Indie Awards has recognized over 95 locally-owned businesses and independent artists with an Indie Award for their contribution to Oakland's unique culture and prosperity.
